New standards for overseas student-recruiting agents approved

The Board of Directors of AIRC (American International Recruitment Council), an organisation that certifies and sets ethical guidelines for overseas student-recruiting agents, has approved revisions in its compliance standards. In an e-mail message to members, the group’s executive director, John Deupree, said the board had unanimously adopted the changes, which include requiring agents to be more transparent about subcontractors who work for them and forbidding them to take a cut of scholarships or financial aid awarded to their student clients. The revised standards are effective immediately for any new applicants for certification. While currently certified agents may continue to operate under the old standards, they are encouraged to be in compliance with the new rules, Mr. Deupree wrote.
